Seeking Creative Nonfiction Editors

What do we want? We want someone who has experience in publishing and editing creative nonfiction, has a strong editorial vision, is able to share responsibility effectively in a team, and sympathizes with our mission:

  • publishing pieces that engage with tension, introspection, empathy, consider positionality, form play, emotional courage, and musicality.
  • uplifting voices from all corners in hopes of breaking down ideas of who is widely read and rebelling against power structures that stifle expression.
  • assisting Sundog in being a platform for artists to showcase their vital work while participating in the wider literary community.

Other Experience & Skills

  • Effective and open communication – particularly as our team works remotely, and needs to stay connected across distance.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines – we publish two issues a year in Spring and Fall, and you would be working as part of a non-hierarchical team of 3 nonfiction editors.
  • A portfolio of creative nonfiction published across a range of literary magazines– it’s helpful if you have understanding of the literary magazine ecosystem more broadly, so that you can make choices that position Sundog distinctively within it.

Tasks

  • Keeping up on submission queue – we publish 2 issues a year, and a typical nonfiction reading load is 170 to 250 pieces an issue.
  • Collaborating with two other nonfiction editors in a non-hierarchical team structure
  • Sending “soft solicitations” to authors – asking them to submit work to our queue
  • Working with writers to edit work for biannual issues
  • Judging our annual Collaboration Contest in fall
  • Promoting the magazine and its writers on social media, post-publication
  • Participating in occasional web meetings with Sundog staff – about once every 4 months.

A few notes on our work and aesthetic:

  • Sundog is a highly collaborative effort and whoever we bring on board will become a full and valued member of our team.
  • As always, we are passionate about contributing to a literary culture that continually evaluates what barriers prevent any author, including and especially writers of color and LGBTQ+ writers, from joining the community and works to remove those barriers.

In light of the latter point above, applications from those identifying as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and global majority folk are especially encouraged.
